The Basics of Cryolipolysis (Freezing Fat)

There has been much talk lately about freezing. We don't mean the cold temperatures of Boston. Freezing fat (also called cryolipolysis) is a popular trend in noninvasive body contouring. This means that you can lose fat without the need for needles, knives, and no downtime.

Here are some basics about body fat

Let's start with the basics. Different types of fat are not the same. There are two types: subcutaneous fat (the fat that is likely to roll up your waistband) and visceral. Visceral fat is the fat that lines your organs and is often associated with heart disease or diabetes.

We will refer to subcutaneous fat as the fat we use for cryolipolysis. A recent study found that the body's ability to remove subcutaneous fat decreases with aging, so we are facing an uphill battle every birthday we celebrate.

From popsicles to freezing fat

Cryolipolysis is literally translated as cold (cryo), oil (lipo), destruction(lysis). It was developed partly from the observations of what can happen when children eat popsicles. No kidding. The "cold-induced Fat Necrosis," which occurred when popsicles were accidentally left on children's cheeks for several hours, intrigued the cofounders. From these pediatric patients, skin samples showed inflammation in fat and normal overlying tissue. It appears that fat may be more vulnerable to cold injury than other tissue types.

This idea was used to create a cooling system that could selectively kill fat cells in pigs. The results were predictable and promising. In the treated areas, there was about a 1/2-inch reduction in the fat layer of the pigs. CoolSculpting, a cryolipolysis procedure that was first approved for human use in 2010, was approved as a treatment to reduce love handles. Clearance was soon granted for the treatment of other parts of our bodies, including the thighs and belly, bra fat, abdomen, back, undersides of the buttocks, and the chin.

How does cryolipolysis actually work? While no one can be certain, we believe that the cooled fat cell dies within a few days. Macrophages, part o the immune system's clean-up crew, begin to break down the fat cells.

A cool process

Over eight million CoolSculpting treatments have been completed worldwide to date. CoolSculpting can be performed in-office of fat freeze clinic in East Manchester, without the need for anesthesia. Liposuction is more painful and can cause bleeding.

Each application of the treatment takes 35 minutes. However, multiple applications may be required to cover a larger area. You may need to do four or more treatments to get rid of all the fat in the belly.

Side effects include redness or swelling, bruising or tingling, numbness or darkening, as well as redness. Most of these side effects will resolve in a matter of months. The most serious, although rarest, a side effect from cryolipolysis may be increased fat growth at the treatment area. This side effect is rare, although it may occur less often than 1% of the time.

Results can be observed in as little time as three weeks. Maximum benefits are visible after approximately three months. A round of treatment results in a 10% to 25% average loss of fat. There is no evidence that there are any other side effects. Based on desired results, it may be necessary to repeat the treatment.

Who is a good candidate for fat-freezing?

Cryolipolysis can be used to safely and effectively reduce fat loss. However, cryolipolysis should not be considered for weight loss. The ideal candidate is close to their ideal body weight but has stubborn, unmanageable fats that are hard to lose with diet and exercise alone. Cryolipolysis is not designed to target visceral and abdominal fat. It won't make you healthier. It might be able to help you find the perfect pair of skinny jeans.
